On my last day of 2017 I finished reading “Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less” by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang. Well, now I have a my New Year’s resolution.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. The author reminds us that we live in a society that has developed a relatively recent trend of overworking. We brag about how little sleep we get, how many hours a week we put into the office, and how we don’t have time to go on vacation. This new lifestyle that most of us have embraced is counterproductive and eventually destructive. The coworker that works through lunch, stays after-hours, and comes in on weekends, puts in the hours, but will never achieve his or her full potential. Eventually, this overworked person will burn out.
By learning to balance our work and leisure, we become healthier and happier, which in turn feeds our creativity and pushes our productivity further.
We all know this, but somehow, we still say things like “I don’t have time to read books”, or “I don’t have time to exercise”, or “I don’t have time for lunch”. I myself am guilty of saying all of these things.
My New Years resolution is that or being more conscientious of my time, and learning to be more productive by adapting a more fulfilling lifestyle.
Happy New Year everyone. Wishing you a restful and productive 2018!
